A little more information Melissa L Kuhn
March 11, 2003 was the last update.
This is to tell you a little about how it came to be that he had developed Cerebral Palsy. This is in some detail to tell you how horrific it was on us both.
I am going to tell you a little about when I went into labor and how the birth went. I went into labor on the 9th of August in 1998 at about 11:30 pm. My mother rushed me to the hospital and the nurse checked my cervix to see how I was dialated and I had reached a two. The nurse broke my water when she checked me. So they admitted me and got me to my room. She came back about 45 minutes later and asked if I wanted anything for the pain and I ask for something to take the edge off. She came back and said I am to give you a shot of morphine. It knocked me and the baby out cold. The next morning I woke up and I was in alot more pain than before. I had only dialated to a three and the doctor cmae in and asked how everything was and I said it hurts(naturally).
He then checked my cervix to see how far along I was but I was still at a three so he put me on a labor inducer called Pitocin. It worked But I only made it to a four and he came back around 1pm and said if your not an further in about two hours we will have to do a c-section. At about 3:45 he came back and checked me and I was still at four cinimeters. He said they would have to prep me for surgery. By now I am scared. This was my worst fears coming true. They got me into surgery and started to get the baby out. They got him out and they were closing me for the surgery and at the same time trying to get Dillion to breathe. Dillion had not even taken his first breath and we were scared. The nurse had went and came back with something and we later learned she went after a intubation kit for him because he had something lodged in his throat. Dillion went eight minutes without any air. They could have declaired dead! But they wheeled him out and I asked my mother to go with him to be with him. I wanted her to go with him because he would know her voice because she had talk to my belly for a month and a half. She would bend down and say to my belly hello in there. She told him "To hurry up because she wanted to hold him and hug him and love him." So I knew Dillion would know her voice. I thought he needed to be with someone he would know.
When they were done with the surgery and I had spent two hours in the recovery room they wheeled me back to my room and when they went past they nursery I saw my mother and my father in there with Dillion. I also saw the tubes, wires and monitors he was on. He had three IV's,wires and tubes in him and I started to get upset. I asked when could I see him and they said it would be a while before that could happen and they had just gotten him stable and breathing right. It was midnight before I got to see him. They brought him into my room and he was inside some big plastic incubation bed. He was so tiny and so lifeless that I thought he was dead. I was not allowed to touch him because of the spreading of germs. They said he was in a fragile state and they did not want to compromise him in any way. They then life-flighted him to Denver. To a childrens hospital. He spent two weeks there and then they flown him back after he had been slowly taken off the oxygen and taught how to suck on a nipple. When he got back to Casper he had to be on oxygen because the altitude threw off his oxygen and he spent another two weeks in the hosapital in Casper. He was one day shy of being a month old before I was able to bring him home. Right after he came home we had to get him placed in a thearapy program for kids who might develop disabilities. He was put into a massage program so that he would not be tense in his muscles later on in life. But he is and it is because of how much brain damage there was at birth. He has had alot of different forms of thearapy. And he will need more for a long while. I will be updating this site as much as possible in the future.
